HOW TO CONNECT THE ROUTER

Do you want WiFi in your student home, but need help connecting your router?

HOW TO GET WIRELESS NETWORK AT YOUR HOME

In Bodø and Mo i Rana, all our student homes have access to the internet via cable. To get WiFi, you must first get a wireless router. This is sold at stores such as Jula, komplett.no, Elkjøp, Power or similar.

In your room you will find a home central (modem). How to connect your router depends on the type of home central that is on your room, and there are slightly different variants around the student homes. This article describes how to connect your router to a home central of the type:

  • ZyXEL P2812AC
  • FMG
  • If you have another type of home exchange and you need help, you can contact the Housing office

CONNECT ROUTER TO HOME CENTRAL ZYXEL P2812AC

All home centrals are connected to the wall with a cable that provides internet to the home. Do not take this out. The router must not be connected directly into the wall.

Procedure may also vary depending on the type of router you have acquired, so read the manual that comes with the router to make sure you set it up correctly.

How to connect

  • Get a wireless router
  • Unpack the router and power cord
  • Plug power cord into router
  • Plug in
  • See that you have power (light indicates power). The light may have a different color depending on the brand of the router.
  • The network cable from the home central must then enter the input on the router marked WAN or Internet.
  • Check that you have light for internet and for wifi. If it flashes this is also ok.
  • Then all you have to do is log on
  • Find the right network (you will find it on the router or on the box the router came in)
  • Password is often stated on the router itself or in the manual that came with the router

If you get in trouble

Do you get red lights, no lights at all - or you do not get online?

  • Check that there is power on both the home central and the router. If there is no power - check that the cords are in.
  • If you have power - but it lights up red - you can try to carefully take the home central down from the wall (you lift it a bit up and out) and make sure that the network cable goes from the router's input marked WAN, and into the home exchange in the entrance where it says "PC".
  • Check that there is a cable between the home central (connected in the WAN port) - and the fiber converter - which is the small box on the side
  • If it still does not work, you can try the good old trick to take the power. Remove the plug and wait about 10 seconds and insert it again.
  • It may take some time before the home central comes on again and turns green.
  • If you have checked and tried all the points above, and it still does not work, you can send an inquiry in the housing app «Studentinord bolig», and someone will come to your aid as soon as possible. There may be some waiting time before you get help.
